Sen. Rob Portman On The Connection Between Drugs & Poverty

Senator Rob Portman is calling for a federal intervention to stop the tide of drugs in America’s neighborhoods.

He spoke at the Columbus Metropolitan Club on Friday about the connection between poverty and heroin.

Portman calls it constructive conservatism, applying conservative principals to tackle a problem in a commonsense way.

Approximately 47 million Americans are living in poverty, even though he says America has spent more than $15 trillion on poverty reduction programs over the past five decades.

Portman says for too many, poverty is generational and persistent.
