Portman highlights wasteful government spending in final days of fiscal year

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) highlighted on Friday how the “use it or lose it” approach to funding federal departments and agencies leads to wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars.
Portman’s monthly series that highlights wasteful spending in Washington concluded that federal agencies and departments are preparing for extravagant shopping sprees as the end of the fiscal year approaches on September 30.
Some appropriations expire if they’re not spent within a specific period of time, and agencies often opt to spend the funds rather than return them. In addition, agencies may fear that spending less than appropriated will make lawmakers think they can absorb budget cuts in the future. The practice may lead to agencies focusing on justifying inflated budgets rather than saving taxpayer dollars.
