Portman Calls on Strickland to Denounce Clinton Attacks on Ohio Coal Workers

Senator Rob Portman condemned the remarks by Hillary Clinton attacking coal workers last night and called on Ted Strickland to denounce them:

“Ted Strickland likes to remind people that he's from southeast Ohio, but he has a record of turning his back on Coal Country. Is Ted Strickland going to stay silent as Hillary Clinton declares war on Ohio’s coal workers? Even though coal is a proven source of relatively inexpensive energy that supports thousands of jobs across Ohio, and even though Ohio relies on coal for approximately 70 percent of our electricity, Ted worked on behalf of a liberal special interest group in Washington that is dedicated to ending coal jobs. Instead of turning his back on Ohio workers again, Ted should denounce Hillary Clinton’s reprehensible attacks and start working on behalf of hard-working families who are trying to make ends meet.”

NOTE: Last night, Hillary Clinton said that, if elected, “we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” Last year, The Hill reported that “To prepare for a possible Senate bid, the former Ohio governor quietly stepped down last week from a senior role with the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank and advocacy group that has promoted a shift away from coal.”
