Sen. Rob Portman said today he is “very concerned over reports of Russian forces and mercenaries operating throughout the Crimea in Ukraine.’’
Declaring that Russian President Vladimir Putin “must come clean on his intentions,’’ Portman called on Putin to "pledge support for a peaceful, non-interventionist resolution of disputes with the new government of Ukraine.''
The Ohio Republican added that the U.S. “must stand by Ukraine in the face of this unacceptable attempt to intimidate the Ukrainian people as they strive to bring more openness and transparency to their country.”
The new Ukraine government has accused Russia of acting aggressively after armed men seized control of two airports in the pro-Russian area of the Crimea, which is part of eastern Ukraine.
