Meet Rob

A fifth generation Ohioan, Rob served Ohio as Congressman for the seven counties of the Second District for twelve years, held two Cabinet-level positions, and was on the White House staff of the first Bush Administration.

Through it all, he has maintained a reputation as a leader who focuses on results.

During his time in Congress, Rob successfully worked with Democratic and Republican administrations to author and pass key pieces of legislation. Rob served on the powerful Ways and Means Committee and was Vice Chairman of the Budget Committee and Chairman of the House Republican Leadership. He gained the respect of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle through his successful legislative initiatives, including reforming the IRS, increasing retirement savings, cutting taxes, curbing unfunded mandates, and expanding drug prevention and land conservation efforts.

From the urban center of Cincinnati to the rural countryside along the Ohio River, Rob represented a diverse Congressional district. In his seven elections to Congress, Rob always won with more than 70 percent of the vote.

In 2005, Rob left Congress when he was asked to serve as U.S. Trade Representative, the Cabinet-level official responsible for implementing and enforcing trade policy. He was successful in reducing barriers to U.S. exports, increasing enforcement of trade laws, and helping to level the playing field for American farmers, workers and service providers.

Following his accomplishments as Trade Representative, Rob was called on in 2006 to serve as Director of the Office of Management and Budget, another Cabinet-level post. A budget hawk, he made his mark by proposing a balanced budget, fighting irresponsible earmarks, and instituting new transparency of federal spending.

During his time in Congress and in the Cabinet, Rob and his wife, Jane, chose to keep their home in Ohio. After commuting to Washington for almost 15 years, Rob left government in August 2007 to be home full-time with Jane and their three children. The family belongs to Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church.

Today, Rob is practicing law with the Cleveland, Ohio-based firm of Squire, Sanders, and Dempsey and is engaged in various community activities, including serving on the board of The Coalition For A Drug Free Greater Cincinnati, a group he founded. He serves on the Advisory Board of The Ohio State University’s John Glenn School of Public Affairs, where he is co-teaching a course on innovation in the public sector. He is also Chairman of Ohio’s Future PAC, an organization devoted to developing creative solutions to Ohio’s economic challenges and supporting policies that create more jobs and opportunities for Ohioans.

Additionally, Rob is a former member of both The Nature Conservancy's Board of Directors and the bipartisan National Parks Second Century Commission.

Rob is an avid outdoorsman and a lifelong hunter and fisherman. He also actively supports and consistently participates in two races in the Cincinnati area that raise funds for nonprofit causes. One is an annual 62-mile charity bicycle race that benefits Parkinson’s research and the other is Paddlefest, the annual canoe/kayak race on the Ohio River.

Rob is a small business owner, and since coming home he has been actively involved in the restoration of Lebanon, Ohio’s historic Golden Lamb Inn, which he owns with his brother and sister. His grandparents owned and operated the Golden Lamb for more than half a century. Several years ago, he co-authored a book highlighting Ohio’s Shaker history, called Wisdom’s Paradise.

He also coaches his eighth grade daughter’s indoor soccer team, the Warrior Women.
