COLUMBUS, Ohio - On Friday, Rob Portman appeared on Yahoo! News Live to discuss Ohio’s prescription drug and heroin epidemic with Katie Couric. In the interview, Rob highlighted his bipartisan legislation, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) – which passed the U.S. Senate earlier this year by a vote of 94-1 – and highlighted the urgent need for Congressional action on opioids. Rob’s CARA tackles the drug epidemic head on by expanding education and prevention efforts, helping law enforcement reverse overdoses to save lives, and expanding treatment and recovery programs.
In the interview, Rob stated, “Here in Ohio, unfortunately we are one of those states that is hardest hit and I’ve been working on this for a long time. Over 20 years ago I started an anti-drug coalition here in Cincinnati that is still in existence. But the grip of addiction is unlike anything we have seen. It is an epidemic…Three years ago we started a process to put together a comprehensive approach to this problem that focuses on prevention but also treatment and recovery - that’s called CARA, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act.”
